Experimental investigation on free surface vortices driven by tangential inlets

    Get PDF
Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements have been carried out in order to analyze the structure of free surface vortices in a promoting geometry with two tangential inlets. Velocity fields associated to the free surface vortex have been obtained at different horizontal planes and Reynolds numbers. Average velocity fields have been calculated and tangential velocity profiles have been compared at different vortex stages and measurement planes. The results show that tangential flow is uniform along the vortex axis and it scales well with the average exit velocity. The tangential velocity profiles, in comparison to the potential behavior, show discrepancies especially at large distances from the vortex axis. Vorticity fields and circulation profiles have been also derived from the measured velocity fields and discussed. The circulation profiles increase along the vortex radius even at large distances from the vortex axis, so that the potential solution is not applicable at all. The comparison of tangential velocity and circulation profiles between promoted and free vortices, the last presented in a previous paper, shows that the tangential motion in a driven vortex is more intense and predominant over the sink effect (radial motion), except very close to the tank bottom, as in a forced configuration (i.e. rotating cylindrical tank)

    The proximity of distance education

[EN] The Institute for Educational Technologies (ITD) in Genoa, part of Italy’s National Research Council (CNR) has long held high-quality on-site training and refresher courses for teachers that are recognized by Italy’s Ministry of Education and Research (MIUR). In addition to participating in face-to-face initiatives, Italy’s teachers are increasingly exploiting opportunities to participate in certified online training initiatives. These are especially popular as they permit teachers a high degree of autonomy and flexibility in managing their learning. Since September 2014, ITD-CNR has been testing and implementing innovative training methods (mostly on behalf of a large Italian public research organization). These include webinars, which make it possible to reach large numbers of participants. ITD-CNR has also designed and made available a series of open courses designed to help teachers develop the skills needed to enhance classroom integration of students with disabilities, specific learning disabilities, and other special educational needs. These courses also address the use of technologies and strategies for more effective school inclusion. To ensure these training proposals remain usable over time and continue to provide relevant content, in 2016 ITD-CNR created an online platform called Essediquadro Training (https://sd2.itd.cnr.it/corsiformazione). This aggregates and makes available five open courses that are free of charge, totalling 130 hours of high-quality, certified training. In the past two years, the platform has attracted over 9000 registered users (pre- and in-service teachers), and has become a focal point for similar training initiatives launched by schools and universities, who are integrating their own training courses with those on offer from Essediquadro Training. In this contribution, we illustrate the characteristics and contents of the Essediquadro Training platform, examine the use of webinars for teacher training, and offer some considerations based on results of satisfaction questionnaires compiled by platform users.Caruso, GP.; Ferlino, L. Financial and fiscal interaction in the Euro area crisis : this time was different

    Get PDF
This paper highlights the anomalous characteristics of the Euro Area `twin crises' by contrasting the aggregate macroeconomic dynamics in the period 2009-2013 with the business cycle fluctuations of the previous decades. We report three stylised facts. First, the contraction in output was marked by an anomalous downfall in investment, while consumption, savings and unemployment followed their historical relation with GDP. Second, households' and financial corporations' debts, and house prices deviated from their pre-crisis trends. Third, the jump in the public deficit-GDP ratio in 2008-2009 was unprecedented and so was the fiscal consolidation that followed. Our analysis points to the financial nature of the crisis as a likely explanation for these facts. Importantly, the `anomaly' in public deficit is in large part explained by extraordinary measures in support of the financial sector, which show up in the stock-flow adjustments and reveal a key interaction between the fiscal and the financial sectors

La prova penale tra epistemologia, tecnica e deontologia. Il ruolo del difensore

    Get PDF
The paper aims, through a series of theoretical and historical- law-philosophical topics, to frame the role and activity of the defense attorney in the framework of the rhetoric, without limiting the meaning of the same to the mere oratory technique or to the related argumentative topoi. In this perspective, a specific correspondence is proposed between the respectively inquisitorial model of the 1930 criminal procedure code and tendentially accusatory model of the 1988 code with regard to the modern and classical notion of ‘proof’

An Updated Review of Cribriform Carcinomas with Emphasis on Histopathological Diagnosis and Prognostic Significance

    Get PDF
Cribriform is a histopathological term used to describe a neoplastic epithelial proliferation in the form of large nests perforated by many quite rounded different-sized spaces. This growth pattern may be seen in carcinomas arising in different organs, and shows important prognostic implications. Therefore, recent data in literature suggest that cribriform carcinoma is a histologically and clinically distinctive type of tumour that should be separated from other similar tumour types. In this article, the pathology of cribriform adenocarcinoma of the prostate, lung, breast, stomach, colon, thyroid, and skin is discussed with particular reference to morphologic and immunohistochemical features, differential diagnosis, and clinical behaviour
